Hangman

This game is usually a good way to kill 10 minutes and help build your students vocabulary.

I have tried to spice it up a bit and even though these ideas seem simple and kind of dumb they have worked over and over again in my classrooms.( especially for elementary and middle school students)

Mario Hangman

I draw a series of pits (think the old game pitfall) with different Super Mario baddies (turtles, fish, cactus) in each pit and at the end I put King Koopa of course. Each time the students make a mistake Mario gets closer and closer to King Koopa. They either guess the word or get eaten by Koopa. Sometimes they don't make it and one of the other baddies get Mario. Kids seem to love this idea. Believe me,  it works!

Roller Coaster Hangman

Again, it is just hangman but you draw out a simple roaster coaster track. Just a line will do. Then draw a roller coaster. If I have a small class I usually draw the kids in the coaster. Then, just mark off like 10 or 15 chances( a small vertical line will do) and for each mistake. You write the letters all the way down the track until you get to the end. Here I draw some sort of monster or whatever with a big mouth. They lose they get eaten. Again, kids love this version.

Jaws Hangman

By now you ought to be getting the idea...kids like seeing cartoon characters get eaten. Make an ocean on the board, the crest of each wave can be used to make a incorrect letter. They lose, they get eaten by JAWS. ( the key to this game is though, for each mistake, you can start them off or get them to do it themselves but making the JAWS theme song. It really makes this version more enjoyable.) A..sorry..WRONG ..da dum...B...sorry..da dum...ha. Continues on like that.
